Fire Station Tour

Our co-op preschool group took a field trip to the Kingston Fire Station today. The kids got a tour of the station and the fire truck and ambulance. They all loved it (the boys especially)! They had a talk about what to do in a fire, what to do when they come across dangerous objects etc. They were able to get into the ambulance and sit in the fire truck. The fire fighters who were showing them around were having a great time and showing them all the compartments and things in the trucks (we were there for almost two hours)! Then we found out that when they don't have calls Friday is their day to clean bathrooms at the fire station (no wonder they'd rather show off their trucks to a group of preschoolers). One of the men put on all his gear to show the kids and let them try on his jacket. It was a great experience for all the kids and fun for us mommies too!

FYI-the lady who was our tour host said that you should teach your children to get out of the house as soon as they hear a fire alarm/smoke detector go off even if it is a false alarm because the chance of them surviving a real fire if they don't get out themselves is slim. By the time the fire department shows up they have often already breathed in too much smoke. So, if your alarm goes off when you are cooking or something, use it as a drill and teach your kids to get out of the house to a predetermined spot outside ANYTIME they hear it.
